Prospective Resource - Identifying Community Needs

Contents: 3 Prospective sheets, 4 facilitator guides.

This unique facilitator-led resource is a great way of organising individual actions or creating group projects specific to local youth groups, schools or the community at large

Prospective is a practical tool designed to guide groups of young people through the aspects of a community in relation to their own abilities so that they can identify opportunities to make a positive contribution to society. It ties in strongly with citizenship, groupwork and thinking skills and is an excellent starting point towards working to the Every Child Matters Enjoy and Achieve and Make a Positive Contribution aims.

The resource consists of a large circular Prospective worksheet, allowing for students to gather round and feel involved throughout the project-based groupwork. The sheet is used for full project planning and, once completed, makes an excellent display for youth centres or classrooms, providing material for further lessons and activities. Full notes available in the accompanying Facilitator Guide.

"It has given the group a sense of identity and has helped them to decide on a project that they work together on. They thought they were too small to make a difference, they feel differently about that now."

An exciting project management tool aimed at young people organising projects for school or the wider community. It is a unique way of building team skills and develops personal qualities including:

Assertiveness

Decision-making

Communication

Confidence

Organisation

Responsibilities

Designed for supporting young people/students to plan and manage a facilitator-led project; perfect for building personal responsibility and teambuilding skills and as a method for involving everyone in the processes of planning and managing projects and activities.

The large sheet allows participants to gather round and freely add ideas using sticky notes which are then organised into collumns and consider implications according to time, cost, people and importance. The completed sheet provides an overview of the various tasks that will need to be completed to achieve the project and students can keep a record of their personal tasks and responsisbilities within their own Personal Record Card.

Personal Record Cards are also used to monitor students’ progress and development and include a personal rating scale to encourage students to consider what personal development they can achieve throughout the projects. An accompanying facilitator guide features step-by-step instructions.

"It has given us a belief in ourselves both in our abilities to work as a group and as individuals."

Dilemmas Resource - Effective Decision Making Game

Contents: 2 x 16 cards, 3 Facilitator Guides.

An engaging role-play activity designed to help groups consider and explore methods of decision making and understand processes of running effective meetings

The activity is designed for minimal teacher input and can be used multiple times with different participants taking on the role of observer and providing feedback to enhance their own understanding of how to manage meeting situations effectively.

Dilemmas features two thrilling role-play scenarios which involve a plane crash and being stranded on a desert island. Character cards are used for pupils to assume roles in the imaginary perils. Each character has their benefits and disadvantages; faced with critical life and death situations, can pupils make the incredibly tough decision over who lives and who dies - or will indecisiveness end up dooming them all?

The scenarios are intended to demonstrate and expose students to the kinds of demanding skills required in an actual meeting, a related social gathering or in life generally.

Suitable for an entire class, skills utilised include:

Communication

Decision-making

Leadership

Listening

Reasoning

Thinking

Ideal for teambuilding, social and problem-solving skills, Dilemmas is an outstanding peer-led learning resource.

"If you are getting young people involved… then this guide is for you. It will be something that I adapt in the future for working with young people and adults."
